Introduction

Not only is it against the law to discriminate against disabled people, it makes little commercial sense: there are 9.8 million people in the UK with some form of disability [1] and between them, they spend over £40 billion a year on goods and services [2].

Would staff in your organisation feel comfortable when dealing with a customer or colleague with a disability – or would they feel awkward or embarrassed? This course will give staff the skills and knowledge they need to work confidently and appropriately with disabled colleagues or customers.

This course is appropriate for any business sector, there are no formal entry requirements and employees do not need any prior experience.

Course features

Developed in partnership with the Employers’ Forum on Disability, the world's leading employers' organisation focused on disability, Disability Confident provides guidance on current best practice to make it easier for businesses to employ disabled people and serve disabled customers.

Featuring dramatisations based on actual experiences, the course explores a comprehensive range of disability issues, from the legislation that exists to protect the rights of disabled people to the myths and assumptions that surround disability.

As you work through the course, you’ll be presented with simple exercises to check your learning. Detailed checklists can be printed off and kept for future reference and an Assessment Quiz at the end of the course lets you gauge how well you have understood all the issues.

You can start the course straight away and access it at any time, providing you have the use of a computer with an internet connection. The course takes approximately 2 hours 30 minutes to complete and you do not have to complete the entire course in a single session. If you do choose to take a break during the course, you will be able to return to the point you left your learning the next time you login. The course is available for six months from the date first accessed.
